Purnima Vrats 2018

As per Hindu lunar calendar, Purnima or Poornima is a full moon day occurring in every Hindu month. Depending upon the place and moon stages, it has various names like Puranmasi, Pournami, Pournima, etc. As per Purnmati calendar system, Purnima also depicts the end of Hindu month. It symbolizes fortune, richness and lavishness.

Significance of Purnima

  • Purnima falling every month has some implication. In Hindu calendar, Purnima is responsible for twelve festivals and occasions that are considered very special.

Festivals Falling On Purnima in 2018

Paush Purnima

As per Hindu calendar, Paush Purnima is a very important day that falls in December-January. Hindu disciples take a sacred dip at the Prayag Sangam (the place where Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers meet) on this Purnima, as it is believed that by doing this all the sins of a person get dismissed and is helpful in attaining ‘moksha’ or salvation.

Magha Purnima

Occurring in the month of Magh, this day is a full moon day and is called Magh Purnima or Maghi Purnima. The famous Kumbh Mela that is held in every twelve years is organized during this time period.

Holi

Phalguna month is considered to be the starting of spring and the festival of colors named Holi falls in this month only. Celebrated in most parts of India and Nepal, this festival is celebrated for two consecutive days.

Hanuman Jayanti

During the Chaitra month, the festival of Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated to give respect to the birth of Vanara God, Hanuman.

Buddha Purnima

Birth anniversary of Gautama Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama by birth name, falls under the month of Vaishakha. Famous as a spiritual educator, He established Buddhism. This festival is notable all over India, Nepal and some other South-East Asian countries.

Vat Purnima

Jyeshtha Purnima is considered as a very special date and has great significance. Witnessed in the Jyeshtha month on the full moon day, the vrat is performed by married women. The purpose of this vrat is to pray for the longevity and prosperity of the husband and get blessed with a blissful married life.

Ashadha Purnima

Celebrated on the Purnima, this day is devoted to Guru. Every year, Rath Yatra is held in the month of Ashadha.

Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is a very auspicious festival celebrated in Shravana month. This festival depicts the love and affection between a brother and a sister. Sisters tie up a sacred thread of protection on the wrist of brothers.

Madhu Purnima

Madhu Purnima is also famous as Honey Full Moon Day and is celebrated during the month of Bhadrapada, the Hindu calendar month. This is mainly celebrated by the Mon people of Thailand, Chittagong region in Bangladesh.

Method of Purnima Puja and Fasting

  • Believers get up early and take bath before sunrise.
  • It is common to keep fast on this auspicious day, but is not mandatory and depends upon the choice.
  • Fasting initializes with sunrise and followers open their fast after moon sighting.
  • Devotees worship Lord Shiva or Lord Vishnu on this day.
